Walls of lunar crater may hold patchy ice, LRO radar finds

Friday, August 31, 2012

Small patches of ice could make up at most five to ten percent of material in walls of Shackleton crater. Scientists using the Mini-RF radar on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have estimated the maximum amount of ice likely to be found inside a permanently shadowed lunar crater located near the moon's South Pole. As much as five to ten percent of material, by weight, could be patchy ice, according to the team of researchers led by Bradley Thomson at Boston University's Center for Remote Sensing, in Mass.

"These terrific results from the Mini-RF team contribute to the evolving story of water on the moon," says LRO's deputy project scientist, John Keller of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Several of the instruments on LRO have made unique contributions to this story, but only the radar penetrates beneath the surface to look for signatures of blocky ice deposits."

These are the first orbital radar measurements of Shackleton crater, a high-priority target for future exploration. The observations indicate an enhanced radar polarization signature, which is consistent with the presence of small amounts of ice in the rough inner wall slopes of the crater. Thomson and his colleagues reported the findings in a paper recently published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

"The interior of this crater lies in permanent shadow and is a 'cold trap'?a place cold enough to permit ice to accumulate," says Mini-RF's principal investigator, Ben Bussey of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. "The radar results are consistent with the interior of Shackleton containing a few percent ice mixed into the dry lunar soil."

These findings support the long-recognized possibility that areas of permanent shadow inside polar impact craters are sites of the potential accumulation of water. Numerous lines of evidence from recent spacecraft observations have revised the view that the lunar surface is a completely dry, inhospitable landscape. Thin films of water and hydroxyl have been detected across the lunar surface using several space-borne near-infrared spectrometers. Additionally, orbital neutron measurements indicate elevated levels of near?surface hydrogen in the polar regions; if in the form of water, this hydrogen would represent an average ice concentration of about 1.5% by weight in the polar regions.

The Shackleton findings are also consistent with those of the recent LCROSS spacecraft's controlled collision with a nearby permanently shadowed polar region near the lunar South Pole, which revealed evidence for water in the plume kicked up by its impact. A radar instrument flown on India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft in 2009 found evidence for ice deposits in craters at the lunar North Pole. Measurements of the albedo (surface reflectance) inside Shackleton crater using LRO's laser altimeter and far?ultraviolet detector are also consistent with the presence of a small amount of ice.

"Inside the crater, we don't see evidence for glaciers like on Earth," says Thomson. "Glacial ice has a whopping radar signal, and these measurements reveal a much weaker signal consistent with rugged terrain and limited ice."

The radar measurements of Shackleton crater were made during three separate observations between December 2009 and June 2010. Radar illuminates shadowed regions and can detect deposits of water or ice, which have a distinctive radar polarization signature compared to the surrounding material. In addition, radar penetrates the terrain to depths of a meter or two and can measure water or ice buried beneath the surface. Radar measurements of Shackleton crater place an upper bound on the ice content of the uppermost meter of loose material of the crater's walls at between five and ten percent ice by weight.

"We are following up these tantalizing results with additional observations," says Bussey. "Mini-RF is currently acquiring new bistatic radar images of the moon using a signal transmitted by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. These bistatic images will help us distinguish between surface roughness and ice, providing further unique insights into the locations of volatile deposits."

The Mini-RF instrument, operated at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., is one of seven instruments on board NASA's LRO spacecraft. NASA Goddard developed and manages the LRO mission. LRO's current Science Mission is implemented for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate sponsored LRO's initial one-year Exploration Mission that concluded in September 2010.

Shabbat Meals: Grandma's Chinese Pepper Steak

By Lauren Bloomberg

Flickr: paumelia

We didn?t observe Shabbat. Well, maybe once or twice. Or perhaps I should say, not formally. Yes, we sat down for dinner as a family. Delicious food was served and we talked about our days. But we didn?t light candles. We didn?t say prayers and we didn?t break bread.

Growing up in Long Island?s suburbia, we were the type of family where the kids went to Hebrew school three days a week but we rarely ever went to services. We went to Jewish sleepaway camps and spent weekends on youth group retreats, but religion was not part of home life. Pepper steak, however, was.

It?s rare that food is served with as much ceremony as my paternal Grandmother Millicent Bloomberg?s pepper steak. In old-school style we?d start our meal with a halved grapefruit (carefully pre-sectioned until the serrated edged grapefruit spoon was invented) or slices of cantaloupe before moving onto the flank steak-and-green pepper stew. A portion would be scooped over rice (usually white) and sided with a lettuce-based salad.

Even when I was young, I wasn?t sure how faux-Chinese had ended up in my grandmother?s, and subsequently my mother?s, repertoire. I figured it was one of those recipes born out of the need to take a cut of meat and stretch the portion with the addition of vegetables and starch. But I couldn?t have been more wrong.

Like many ?family? recipes, this pepper steak was not an invention of my wonderful kin. It came from that place that many of the greatest ?secret? recipes come from: It was clipped from somewhere else. In this case, the idea was snipped from the pages of Long Island newspaper Newsday. From a 1987 article (grandma calls it an ad) devoted to the Chinese New Year. But don?t tell my cousins that.

Of course, while the recipe originated in the pages of Newsday, the version that turns up on the table in our home is twisted and different. It is also rarely the same twice. Don?t like green peppers? Grandma would substitute string beans. My mom liked to sneak broccoli into our diet by adding it to the mix. Both cooks are happy to create extra crunch and texture by straining a can of water chestnuts and mixing them in. Way before they became de rigeur, wheat berries might find their way into the rice.

Now I admit, pepper steak has never been my favorite. I prefer baked salmon or the excellent meatloaf that other relatives turned their noses at. However no dish ? be it served Monday or Friday or Saturday night ? was ever served up with the same excitement as the pepper steak. No entree more requested. No leftovers ever left over. A shabbat dinner with all of the pomp and none of the circumstance.

Millicent Bloomberg?s Pepper Steak

From: Millicent Bloomberg
Makes 4 servings

1 pound flank steak, frozen
? cup canola oil
? cup onion, roughly sliced
2 cup green peppers, roughly sliced
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
? teaspoon ground black pepper
? teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon soy sauce
Hot cooked rice

1) While frozen, cut steak diagonally across grain into thin slices, then cut into strips about 2 inches long. Defrost.

2) When steak has defrosted, heat oil in heavy skillet over medium heat. Dry and add meat to pan. Brown, turning as needed.

3) Mix in onion, green pepper, garlic, salt, pepper and ginger. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, about 3 minutes or until tender.

4) Stir together cornstarch, broth and soy sauce until smooth. Stir into meat mixture. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Simmer 1 minute. Serve over rice.

Circle of 13: Military's Social Science Grants Raise Alarm

The Pentagon's $50 million Minerva Research Initiative, named after the Roman goddess of wisdom and warriors, will fund social science research deemed crucial to national security. Initial proposals were due July 25, and the first grants are expected to be awarded by year's end.

But the Network of Concerned Anthropologists, which includes professors from American and George Mason universities, said dependence on Pentagon funding could make universities an "instrument rather than a critic of war-making."

In a May 28 letter to federal officials, the American Anthropological Association said that it was of "paramount importance . . . to study the roots of terrorism and other forms of violence" but that its members are "deeply concerned that funding such research through the Pentagon may pose a potential conflict of interest."

Shopping and Product Reviews: Insurance Protection for Personal ...

It is correct that people will buy many things which can be the fulfillment of their daily necessity and this is what we will find when people decide to include personal car in their wish list. Car for modern people can be very crucial because it will help them to use the time properly especially on the road for reaching their working place for example so they can be more productive in using time not only for working but also for many other activities.

However, buying car is not only about collecting money for getting something which they can use freely because people will also need to consider about the car sake especially in protection aspect. When there is something wrong with car, it is not only the car which will be suffering but the owner will also have to face suffering of repairmen cost for example. That is why people should also consider about the auto insurance protection for their personal vehicle when they make the plan for buying the car for their personal need.
This protection should be included in the plan of buying car because it will take a lot of money than we can expect and it will add the load people have to afford financially.

Sony debuts new phones, tablets, TVs, cameras

13 hrs.

Sony has announced a whole flock of new products at the IFA tech?trade show in Berlin. Practically every line of consumer electronics was refreshed during the hour-long press conference, from mobile phones and tablets to cameras and TVs. Here's the short version:

The biggest announcement, at least physically, would be an enormous, new super-high-definition TV. The XBR-84X9005 is an expansive 84 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 3,840-by-2,160 ? twice as many pixels in both directions as a 1080p set. Of course it supports 3-D and?has?all the usual smart-TV features. It should be available this year, and while pricing wasn't discussed, it will probably be extremely expensive.

Four new smartphones were also shown off: The Xperia TX, T,?V, and J are Sony's?latest Android offerings, coming in three distinct sizes and specs. The TX is the flagship model, with a 4.6-inch 720p display, 13-megapixel camera, and lots of built-in media functions; it has a sort of twin, the Xperia T, described as being used by James Bond, that doesn't differ much in specs but has a slightly different design. The V has a smaller 4.3-inch screen (also 720p) and is water-resistant, while the J is smaller still at 4 inches?and looks to be the budget device. All the phones share an understated design and slightly curved back.

There's a trio of tablets (or tablet-like devices) as well, also very distinct from one another.

The Tablet S is the newest version of Sony's regular consumer tablet, with the same slightly wedge-like form factor but lighter, faster, and now also "splash-proof." It'll recognize wet fingers, so you can bring it poolside with no worries. It has a sleek keyboard dock, but the flat, touch-sensitive keys don't look conducive to quick or extended typing.

The Vaio Duo 11, a combination tablet and laptop made for Windows 8, was leaked earlier this week but is now official. It can be used as a tablet, but the screen folds up to reveal a hidden keyboard.?It's really more of a compact full-on PC than a tablet, with USB, HDMI, SD?and even VGA ports. People seeking productivity will find lots to like, but consumers may want something simpler.?

Sony is attempting to break into a whole new class of device with the Tap20, a 20-inch,?all-in-one "tabletop PC" that lays flat like a tablet. It sounds a bit strange at first, but as a household device for watching movies, editing photos and playing games, it could actually be a good compromise: the cordless portability of a tablet combined with the size and power of a desktop.

Lastly, there's?a pair of cameras. The NEX-5R is an update to its mirrorless interchangeable lens line that adds better?autofocus and some handling improvements. You can also run optional "apps" downloadable from a Sony app store. Then there's the Action Cam, a small 1080p camera like those from GoPro and Contour that clips onto helmets and surfboards and the like, capturing wide-angle footage that you can review through a smartphone app.

Most of the devices should be available in the next few months, but as IFA is a European show, differences in each country's pricing and schedule prevent Sony getting too specific. A?U.S. release of these devices is likely not far behind, and pricing will be announced closer to that time.

Several more devices and accessories were announced as well and are on display at the show; you can read about them at the?Sony Europe press center.

Xero: the Ankylosaurus of Accounting SolutionsThe Shoeboxed ...

At an impressive length of up to 30 feet and weight over 13,000 pounds, you wouldn?t want to meet an Ankylosaurus in a dark alley (or cave). Add some impressive armor and a large tail club, and you?d think the Ankylosaurus was built to fight? but you?d be wrong. The Ankylosaurus had a reputation for being a rather affable herbivore.

    Xero Accounting Solution

Since this week?s featured accounting platform is such a user-friendly solution, it?s the first one we?re comparing to an herbivore.?But the Ankylosaurus is not just any herbivore: it might just be the most indestructible one out there. And without further ado, here?s the next installment in our?Dino Accounting Series:?Xero.

Xero is an online accounting platform that has herds of satisfied customers. Regarded by many as an all-in-one solution, Xero combines real-time bank transactions, invoicing, expense claims and contact management into one easy to use dashboard. ?Just as the Ankylosaurus sometimes traveled in packs for increased efficiency, Xero has come to understand the effectiveness of consolidation with their long list of features, add-ons and partners (including Shoeboxed!). ?Even if Xero doesn?t provide the exact service you?re looking for, you can rest assured that one of its 50+ add-ons will meet your needs. ?If you?re still not satisfied, Xero releases new features every three to six weeks based on customer feedback, so be sure to drop them a line and let them know what you want!

Even though it?s the most congenial of the dinosaurs we?ve featured, the Ankylosaurus was so tough that even the Tyrannosaurus Rex would have a hard time battling a full-grown adult. Xero should be seen the same way: it is so easy to use and versatile that once Xero continues to gain momentum globally, it could be the major contender in the small business accounting space. The competition would have a hard time biting into their loyal customer base. Here is what you can expect from going vegetarian with Xero:

    Xero Strengths:

    • Very user-friendly and intuitive
    • Integrates with bank feeds and cross-references receipts for reconciliation
    • Easy to read dashboard with key summaries for your business
    • Offers support for many international currencies
    • Cloud-based for multiple access points (with unlimited users!)
    • Complete sales tax support (quarterly and annual filing reports available)
    • Offers a partner program which allows accountants and/or partner(s) to access and manage accounts via one central page

    Xero Weaknesses:

    • Xero is still relatively new in the U.S., so your accountant might not be familiar with it
    • Does not handle inventory, purchases and stock
    • Payroll is only available in Australia for now, so users in other countries will need to use add-ons or other packages
    • Monthly fee (SaaS) increases with add-ons
    • Exporting data from Xero can be time consuming

It also happens to be true that the Ankylosaurus had the smallest brain to body ratio, making it not the ?brightest? dinosaur that ever lived. That being said, Xero is designed so that users who might know next to nothing about accounting can keep accurate books that will satisfy their picky accountant. (Accountants love Xero too!)

Xero Accounting SolutionXero is probably best for business owners who:

    • Need an easy-to-use platform with access for their accountants
    • Work in any industry
    • Are planning on building their business (very scalable option)
    • Are looking for access to tons of informational resources and people
    • Travel or do business internationally

While you?re marinating on which accounting software is best for your business, consider Xero.?If you like free trials and products that are easy to use, Xero might be the accounting solution for you. ?Like the Ankylosaurus, Xero isn?t designed to be the largest dinosaur on the block; however, it is large enough to build and support an exceptional product, yet nimble enough to deliver innovative features that fulfill users? changing needs.

You can?t go wrong with a serving of nutritious vegetables and a powerfully simple accounting platform with a cult following.

Thinking about trying Xero? Already using Xero? Please share your Xero experiences and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Take the time to research the subject yourself, rather than clicking on the first questionable advertisement.

    Mistake: Leaving multiple files open.

You?re an expert at multitasking, meaning you need to constantly access many files. But leaving multiple files open in different applications can put a significant strain in your system. Try to keep only necessary resources active and see how much faster your machine responds.

Mistake: Not being proactive with computer maintenance.

Computer issues arise frequently, even for the most savvy computer user. That?s why taking a proactive approach is best so your computer remains secure and fast. You can get a free diagnosis of issues that may be affecting your PC?s performance by visiting www.mycleanpc.com. You can easily fix common issues before they become costly (and timely) problems.

Mistake: Responding to an email with an ?incredible opportunity.?

Everyone has received them ? that email investment opportunity that seems too good to ignore. The reality is, many scammers prey on trusting individuals or those who are enticed by get-rich-quick schemes. These scammers may even complete an initial transaction, only to later wipe out all your accounts. Never provide personal information, including banking information or your Social Security number, to anyone over email.

    Mistake: Visiting adult websites.

?Triple X? can also mean triple the issues. Some sites harbor more than just adult material, they can create a domino-effect of pop-ups, forcing your PC to a grinding halt as it deals with the incoming viruses that drain the system?s resources. Avoiding suspicious sites is part of keeping your computer running at its best. ?

If you?ve made some of these mistakes in the past, don?t worry. Many people are tricked each day. By learning from these useful tips and suggestions, you?ll keep your PC running fast and issue-free.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Shopping Considerations | Auto Magazine

Hybrid vehicles continue to grow in importance, offering consumers the best of two possible worlds: vehicle electrification and extended range. By making use of electric motors and a gasoline engine, a hybrid electric vehicle ensures that you can take that long trip without having to plug-in someplace and wait hours for a recharge.

The Toyota Prius is synonymous with "hybrid," but there are other models for you to consider. Read on for tips on how to buy a hybrid electric vehicle, representing one of the most fuel efficient and cleanest car segments sold today.

    General Definitions

What is a hybrid vehicle? Well, for starters, it is officially called a hybrid electric vehicle, one of several types of vehicles that offer at least some kind of vehicle electrification.

All hybrids make use of two fuel systems. Today, those systems are a gas-powered internal combustion engine and electric motors. The gas engine is paired with a transmission to turn the wheels. The electric motor may make use of a generator and regenerative braking to produce electricity that is sent to and stored in a battery system. Such systems original used nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, but in recent years most manufacturers have switched to lithium-ion (li-ion) or lithium-polymer (li-poly) batteries that are lighter weight and more efficient.

    Plug-in or Not

Traditional hybrid vehicles receive electricity onboard, with no need to plug-in to an outlet to draw current. Today, your hybrid vehicle options have expanded as there are models that can be plugged in. Models, including the Chevrolet Volt, the Ford C-MAX Energi and the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, do plug in and offer an advantage of running on electric-only power longer than traditional hybrids. If your trips are mostly local, you?ll put some serious space between gas station visits, lowering your fuel costs and reducing the amount of emissions dumped into the air.

Another advantage of a plug-in vehicle is that there are tax deduction benefits offered, something that traditional hybrids no longer have. Your tax benefit is determined by the federal government and depends largely on the vehicle you select as well as your tax bracket. Buy a Chevrolet Volt and you may be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit; with the PHEV Prius, your tax benefit is up to $2,500. State and local benefits may also be available.

    Cost Premium

When buying a hybrid, you?ll pay more for this vehicle then you would for a comparably equipped gasoline model. The difference is typically from $3,000, but you may notice cars that are priced at least $5,000 higher. What you need to do here is compare equipment levels. For instance, the Ford Fusion Hybrid comes in about $8,000 more than the base Fusion model. On closer inspection the difference is about $2,500 as the Fusion Hybrid offers a trim level comparable to the Fusion SEL.

With a cost premium in play, you?ll want to determine how long it will take for you to recoup the extra cost. One way to figure that out is to compare the fuel economy between like models. The example of the Ford Fusion is a good one ? the 2012 edition gets 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway for a combined 26 mpg. The Fusion Hybrid gets 41 mpg city, 36 mpg for a combined 39 mpg. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, then your gas cost at $3.50 per gallon would be calculated as follows:

15,000 miles divided by 26 mpg equals 577 gallons. Multiply 577 by $3.50 per gallon and your annual fuel costs are $2,020.

With the Fusion Hybrid you?ll divide 15,000 by 39 and get 385 gallons. Multiply 385 by $3.50 and your annual fuel costs are $1,348. That means you?ll save $672 per year. If your hybrid has a $5,000 price premium than it will take you nearly 7 and one-half years to recoup your cost. Clearly, buy a hybrid if you expect to keep it at least that long and you think that gas prices will only go higher.

    What Size

Most hybrid models come in smaller sizes, but there are some vehicles such as the full-size Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and the big Lexus LS 600h L sedan that are also sold. Familiarize yourself with the various models offered and consider only those that meet your needs.

Some hybrid models lose as much as 20 percent of trunk storage capacity as the battery pack juts into the trunk. Other hybrids take away rear seating space for the same reason.

Most hybrids are paired with a single-speed transmission, although some have regular automatic or continuously variable transmissions. You will want to test drive the models that interest you, taking it out on the open road and driving it extensively around town. Learn if the power offered is sufficient for your needs ? hybrids get horsepower from both energy sources, therefore you won?t lack the get up and go to get moving with such vehicles.

    HEV Considerations

Every hybrid vehicle comes with a hybrid warranty, covering the electrical parts including motors, generators and battery packs. By law, the minimum warranty for the battery system alone is 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some states, such as California and New Jersey, mandate a 10-year or 150,000 mile warranty. In any case, familiarize yourself with the maintenance procedures for a hybrid and follow these carefully, to ensure that you enjoy the maximum benefit of owning one.

Getting In Touch With Acupuncture For Infertility ?

In the case of overweight persons, an acupuncture therapist can begin with a physical and psychological assessment to know the reason behind the patient?s weight condition.

For a patient who would really like to lose weight with acupuncture, the acupuncturist commonly inserts 5 needles in every ear. Of those needles, four facilitate with detoxification among the body: kidneys, lungs, nervous system and liver. Last needle aids in relaxation.

The principle of acupuncture is that the specific meridians of the body (composed of lines) and pressure points. If there is a disease that yin and yang (hot and cold side of things) are not balanced, leading to physical symptoms such as acne. Restore the balance are specific pressure points or acupuncture points are inserted along a line with a needle. After the needles are inserted in the fields of law, the slow flow of energy back into balance, eliminating the disease in this process.

Acupuncture is not something new, it has existed for around 2,600 years and used in China as anesthesia. So why wait, relieve yourself of the pain and be revived through acupuncture.

So what can be done to treat migraine headaches? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), studies suggest that acupuncture can play a significant role in treating migraines, as well as many other types of headaches.

Today, I have noticed that several people are looking towards various therapies rather than ancient solutions for improving our health. A study in 2004 showed that thirty five% of American adults are obese and that figure looks prefer it can be climbing to alarmingly dangerous levels. Acupuncture weight loss treatment is one such solution, and in this text I intend to debate the effectiveness of acupuncture weight loss treatments.

Health insurance is something to consider when you look at the question ?How much is acupuncture?? but you have to meet many requirements to get acupuncture costs covered. Usually, the number of treatments you need to have will determine acupuncture cost. No matter how you look at it, the cost of acupuncture can be somewhat pricy, but it is often effective in increasing fertility, relieving anxiety, and even helping with lower back pain. Many factors can affect cost, but acupuncture is often a less costly treatment that other traditional procedures.

Acupuncture works to open the blockages in these pathways by inserting needles in the acupuncture points lying on the meridians. These needles activate the points which are associated with body organs. This activation maintains smooth flow of energy and increases circulation in blood.

Regrettably people still seem to have this notion that acupuncture is nothing more than putting needles into their body. They do not realize how many years it takes to learn the order in which these needles are inserted in which to improve upon given aches and pains. It is in no way luck.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that is also quite effective in treating back problems. So take a look at his credentials and make sure that he is accredited.

Iraqi officials: Series of attacks kill 8 people

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Attacks by insurgents killed eight police and soldiers in Iraq Sunday, police said, the latest onslaught meant to undermine the Baghdad government.

In the first attack, gunmen in a moving vehicle opened fire from silenced weapons at a police patrol in Ur, a predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad, police said. Two policemen were killed and a third was wounded in the early morning shooting.

Several hours later, gunmen also using pistols fitted with silencers killed three private security guards at an amusement park in eastern Baghdad.

In the western province of Anbar, two roadside bombs went off on an army patrol near Fallujah, killing three soldiers, police and hospital officials said.

Fallujah is 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baghdad.

Health officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.

Security forces and government offices are top targets for insurgents seeking to shake people's confidence in the government's ability to provide security. More than 200 people have been killed in attacks this month in Iraq.

Reliable Information About Equipment Leasing And Its Benefits ...

Equipment leasing is an agreement between the lending and borrowing parties. This agreement takes place when the borrowing person promises the lender that they will pay for the commodity in question. The borrower has the right to use the commodity for the stipulated period of time.

To lease out in lay mans language may be used to mean handing over your equipment to someone else who over the stipulated period of time becomes the new owner. For this to be actualized, the new owner will be liable to pay some rental fees. It should however be noted that the lender will always remain to be the owner of the asset even over the agreed duration of time.

Leases are grouped into two categories, the finance lease or the rental agreement lease and the operating lease. In the rental lease the hire period is long to an extent that the lease holder tends to use the property for almost the rest of its life period. During this time the lessee will be using that particular item as if he is the rightful owner although he is not.

A lease is usually classified as an operating lease if in any case it does not secure for the lending party the upturn of the capital expense and a return on the invested funds throughout the lease period. Therefore, the property should always be treated as a fixed asset thus the receivable rentals should be added in income during the leasing period. Costs, including depreciation, incurred in earning the rental income should be charged to income.

Property ownership comes with many advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the prospect of gainful operations over the productive life of the asset, more income from the appreciation in value of the asset, or residual value realization. The disadvantages include the changes in return due to changing economic conditions, technological obsolescence and idle capacity. The lender should be keen to expend any costs that they have incurred in negotiating and arranging the lease in the same year they were incurred.

A finance lease cannot just be cancelled. However, it may be cancelled under some conditions. For instance, this may happen upon occurrence of some remote contingency with permission of the lender or if the lease is extended or renewed. These conditions are usually rare.

It should be noted that when leasing, the rights and obligations involved in this contract will be similar to those of the outright buyer. One is required to be keen in considering the choices that are at their disposal. As a result of this, accounting comes in. One is accountable to the leasing terms and conditions.

The lessee will therefore, in the balance sheet include finance lease assets together with owned assets under the heading of tangible fixed assets. However, leased assets should be distinguished from owned assets and amount disclosed, again show a liability in respect of lease payments not yet made. The liability in respect of minimum lease payments not yet paid is split into long-term and current liabilities.

Equipment leasing has been of great importance and of benefit to many people over years. Despite the fact that even equipments from leasing, they also are termed as assets. These assets can be accounted for in the account books. This however will be determined by the fact that they will in future be of economic benefit by increasing the inflow to the enterprise.
