A Small Home Improvement Project: Refinishing Our Original ...

Some of the new bathroom decor items can also be seen in this photo, including the cute little retro chrome and white trash can from Target.

This fall we decided to have our old 1944 white bathtub refinished by a professional tub reglazer.? It has been needing it for about five or six years.? When our kids were younger and still liked to use lots of tub toys, it seemed pointless to waste the money any sooner.? When we bought our house fifteen + years ago, the sellers unfortunately had the tub refinished just before listing the house and we didn?t realize it at the time.? In refinishing the tub, the old enamel was chemically etched so the epoxy would adhere, but it also permanently damaged the tub.? The tub looked great when it was first done, and it still did up until we had a toddler using the tub regularly.? With the tub toys, or anything for that matter, like a shampoo bottle being often left in contact with the tub surface, the tiny bit of moisture under the objects, slowly caused deterioration of the epoxy reglazing material.? Eventually it was full of chips in the finish.? Our tub looked absolutely terrible after about five years of regular use.? This is why most of the tub re glazing care instructions say to wipe down the tub after use and not to use any kind of non skid mats in tubs.? We got used to the unsightly tub, but it got so ugly, eventually the kids complained about how bad it looked and that it needed to be redone.

We didn?t want to go through the headaches and major expenses of redoing another bathroom just yet, at least not until the kids are a bit older, therefore, getting the bathtub reglazed/ refinished again, made the most sense to us, rather than ripping out the tub and starting from scratch.? The stripping of the old epoxy glaze was about $100 and the application of the new finish added another $300 to the expense.? It was not the cheapest quote we got, but the company had some of the better reviews on Yelp and AngiesList out of the local companies.

We tried to plan the tub?s refinishing for a time when it wouldn?t effect our lives too drastically.? The chemical stripping of the old ugly chipped glaze and resurfacing took about three hours from start to finish.? The workman was here at 9 in the morning and gone by noon.? He used a big tube that sucked out the smelly fumes outside while he worked.? Nevertheless, it was really stinky in the rest of house for most of the day, even with the door closed to the bathroom.? I am pretty sensitive to smells and really hated the off-gassing part. The care instructions said to not use the tub for at least 24 ? 48 hours and to make sure all water was cleaned up after bathing or showering for the first month after application.? The tub still had a chemical smell for a few weeks after it was done.? To avoid the chemical smell, we pretty much had to keep the bathroom door closed, unless we needed to use it, and we mainly used the other bathroom during that first month. I wish it didn?t involve the nasty chemicals, but there didn?t seem to be a good way to avoid them, other that not doing the project at all or completely replacing the tub.

We aren?t expecting this to be a permanent fix, but at least it will get us another half dozen years of decent looking use out of the tub, especially now that the kids are teens and no longer into tub toys or playing in the bath.? By time it is looking worn out again, I hope we will have forgotten about all the frustrations and hard work that went into our other bathroom and be ready for another big home improvement project.

About a year ago, I found a section of the seafoam green floor tile under the transition between the bathroom floor and the red oak floor in the hallway. ? When the time comes, we will likely return it to the original green with maybe an accent of yellow, similar to what was probably in the bathroom before the previous homeowners ripped it all out in the mid 1970s.? Sometime in the mid 70s they replaced the original bathroom tile with a beige marble looking solid surface tub surround, white counter top, and beige vinyl flooring.? It wasn?t very exciting or dramatic like 1940s or 1950s tile.? But for now, the tub does look much better than it has in a long time.

Since we were fixing up the tub surface, we also cleaned up the old chrome tub spout with a good soaking in vinegar and put in a new handle, new trim kit on the shower and handle, and new drain cover.? When everything was complete, my daughter, B, and I went shopping and picked out a new soap dispenser, a little retro looking pop up trash can, and towels, a bath mat, a shower curtain to match the soap dispenser.? B was really considerate, and didn?t pick anything too juvenile or girly that her teenage brother would totally hate.?? It isn?t an awesome vintage looking bathroom yet, but since this is my kids bathroom for the next half dozen years, it doesn?t have to be.? For less than $550 dollars, it looks like a nice new contemporary bathroom.? They really aren?t into retro decor, and they are pretty happy with the results of their bathroom.

How broken windows can impact our health and fitness | My Body ...

Happy Friday!

In Malcolm Gladwell?s Tipping Point he brought to light the idea of the broken window theory ? although it?s been around since the early ?80?s.

The broken window theory is fascinating, and I believe it applies so much to our health and fitness.

It suggests that people on streets with lots of broken windows, graffiti, garbage, etc., are more likely to throw trash on the street, graffiti the
walls, and overall have much less respect for the property on that street than if it were gleaming.

Think about it this way?

When you?re in a sparkling bathroom you?re way more likely to keep it that way, right?

When former Mayor Giuliani first become mayor of NYC, he went after the small infringements like meter skipping for subways, graffiti, and getting rid of the guys that washed car windows whether you asked them to or not.

He felt that if you attack the small nuances, the serious ones like assault, rape and murder would diminish.

He was right.

So, I believe this applies to us as well?

I find that:

When my office is messy, I?m not nearly as productive, organized and on point.

When my kitchen is messy, I tend to order in food more.

When my laundry is piling up, I skip the gym because I don?t have any clothes to wear.

When I don?t have healthy food stocked up, I?m way more likely to eat unhealthy.

I try very hard not to let the small annoying things build up.

Seems like common sense but it can make a BIG difference, and it?s certainly not common practice.

Like ?-> spending just 5 minutes every night cleaning and organizing, stopping at the grocery store (no matter how annoying it might be), and doing laundry every week, as opposed to letting it build up.

THE PROBLEM WITH LETTING THINGS BUILD UP?

Is that they become DAUNTING! As tempting as it is to say, ?Alright, I?ll do everything once??, it?s much more effective and way LESS daunting to do a little every day.

I find that when I stay on top of these small but impactful tasks, staying consistent with my diet and exercise is easier.

Just like nothing begets nothing ?-> consistency begets consistency.

So, if you?re unsure of what to do this weekend, why not spend some time cleaning and organizing?

Small things can make a big difference, and we might as well make them work in our favor.

McGregor: 'Impossible' film tells tsunami truths

He may have been taken "totally by surprise" by his Golden Globe nomination for "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" Thursday, but on Friday, Ewan McGregor joined TODAY's Savannah Guthrie to talk about his next film, "The Impossible" -- a fictionalization of one family's true-life experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

"There was something very honest and truthful about the script, I thought," he said. "Brutal, really. Because it was a horrendous situation to get caught up in. But by focusing on this one family it was a unique look at the devastation of that event."

He recognized that there was a "responsibility" to everyone who was caught up in the tsunami, which killed over 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. "We had to focus on making the film honest and true and not letting it spill over into Hollywood," he said.

And, in case "Star Wars" fans needed a little more reassurance, Guthrie made sure that the actor confirmed his interest in returning to that film series (he played Obi-Wan Kenobi as a young man). "George (Lucas) always talked about there being nine stories, so it's nice that there will be nine stories. And if they need me, I'll be there of course."

"The Impossible" opens in limited release on Dec. 21.

workers' compensation program - NOLA.com

New Orleans needs to do a better job of managing its workers' compensation program, the office of the inspector general said in a report released Thursday. In response, Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration said?it has made significant changes to the program this year and will take or consider other measures to improve its performance.

The OIG report examined the city's management and oversight of its self-insured workers' compensation program between 2008 and 2011. During that period the city spent an average of $16 million on workers' compensation expenses per year.

The analysis found that the city did not effectively manage the?program and did not exercise oversight?commensurate with its financial impact, Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux said.?"If the city is going to self-insure,"?he said, "it needs to behave like an insurance company and reduce risk by implementing a comprehensive safety program designed to prevent employee injuries."

Employees who are injured on the job are entitled to payment of their medical bills, compensation for lost wages and, when necessary, death benefits for their survivors.

New Orleans self-insures itself for such claims, and the report says this approach is typical for large employers because it allows them to avoid paying significant premiums to insurance companies. By definition, however, self-insured entities "assume financial liability for any losses resulting from employee accidents," the report notes.

Rather than managing the program itself, the city contracts with an outside firm to administer it. From 2000 to February 2012, that firm was Cannon Cochran Management Services Inc. Hammerman & Gainer Inc. has administered the program since March. In addition, the city has transferred its entire risk management office from the Law Department to the Chief Administrative Office, and in May the former risk manager was terminated and replaced.?

The OIG report said it identified numerous problems with the?workers' compensation program in recent years, including:

• The city gradually discontinued several of its safety and loss-control initiatives and did not have a citywide operational safety plan in place as required by state law.
• The city did not select outside legal counsel and vendors through an open and competitive procurement process.
• The city did not have adequate internal controls in place to oversee vendors and ensure that all incurred charges were necessary and accurate.
• The city did not have adequate metrics in place to manage its compensation program effectively and evaluate the third party administrator's performance.

"We concluded that the city did not effectively manage its workers' compensation program commensurate with its financial impact and did not take sufficient measures to prevent employee injuries," the report says.

The report notes that the city "has made efforts to make improvements to its workers' compensation program during the course of this evaluation. However, additional actions are needed to remedy problems identified in the findings."

During 2008-11, the report says, the city paid $67.4 million in workers' compensation claims, with $37.3 million in payments going to Fire Department personnel and $22.9 million to police officers. Under state law, it notes, firefighters with at least five years of service who develop heart or lung disease are automatically eligible for workers' compensation benefits, without having to show that the disease resulted from their work.

In responding to the OIG report, Chief Administrative Officer Andy Kopplin disputed the finding that the city does not have useful metrics in place to monitor the compensation program, saying that the city is working closely with?the third-party administrator?on that. He agreed that an outside audit of the compensation claims is long overdue and said one will take place soon.

Although the city has not had a safety engineer since 2008, Kopplin said, "it is incorrect to assume that those responsibilities are currently going unfulfilled," and he said the city is developing an operational safety plan that will cover all departments, not just police and fire.

Snapseed leads Android Apps of the Week

This week's list brings us an all-star line-up of apps from all the big wig developers, including Google and Twitter. Granted some of these apps, like the top app of the week Snapseed, aren't so big on Android yet, but they surely will be. Snapseed is a cool photo editor with a slick interface, and we've also got a photo-based Twitter update to enjoy. Google and Rhapsody both intend to expand your music libraries, and Viddy is a fun way to capture short video clips and beautify them for your favorite social networks.

After enjoying a lot of success and popularity on iOS, this award-winning mobile photo editor app makes it over to Google Play. Yes, I know, photo editing apps frequent this list a lot lately, but hey! They're quite popular and there have been some big ones lately. Snapseed from Nik Software gives you plenty of tools and filters to make you a mobile life capturing artist. The selling point here is the ease of use and streamlined interface. You can selectively adjust different objects or areas of a photo, add borders, throw some fun depth of field effects in, and share everything with your favorite social networks with a simple touch.

Speaking of photo editing on the go, the latest Twitter update lets you make some basic tweaks and edits to your photos as well, turning the app into something of an alternative Instagram. It still keeps all the other beloved Twitter features, but adds the ability to share and edit photos through a feature called TwitPic. This is all due to a bit of break-up between Instagram and Twitter, Instagram being married (read: owned by) Facebook and whatnot. Twitter was tired of playing third wheel, and took a stand, leading to this attempt to salvage the same functionality Instagram users once enjoyed.

While we recently saw Rhapsody on this list for its most recent updates, which made it easier to discover new music via a listening history, Rhapsody has gone ahead and released an all new stand-alone app. Rhapsody SongMatch uses your device's microphone and Internet connection to listen to and identify any song that you might hear playing in a store or on the radio. The days of Google searching lyric quotes to find a match are truly dead and gone. Of course, you can save these results and listen to them instantly on the Rhapsody service, provided you are a subscriber.

Well isn't that a fun coincidence? The giants of Google have gone and released basically the same app as Rhapsody SongMatch, sans the attachment to a subscription based service. Using your device's microphone and Internet connection (again), you can identify and save any song you hear while out and about, with the ability to purchase identified songs from the Google Play store and add them directly to your library. You can even add the ?widget directly to your lock screen, saving you precious seconds of hassle. If you still buy music rather than stream it, here is your app.

Viddy is kind of hard to describe. It's a video editor, but not in the way any filmmaker would find useful. Essentially, it's the Instagram or Snapseed of the video world, letting you capture moments and artsify them up with color correction, retro filters, and what have you. You can only capture short segments of video, but you can also add some popular songs to them to create a mood, and of course, share your creations with social media. This isn't meant as a serious editing app, but more as just a fun aside. The app is a bit lackluster technically, however, with a few too many bugs and glitches.
