Peruvian cardinal: Church must avoid partisan involvement : News ...

Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne of Lima warned against clerical involvement in partisan political affairs, as Church leaders in Peru sought to mediate an increasingly tense conflict over the opening of a new mine.

Protests against the proposed gold mine in Cajamarca exploded into violence last week, and 5 demonstrators were killed in battles with police. Hoping to stave off further violence, Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos of Trujillo met with leaders of the protest, and was planning to meet with Peru?s justice minister, Juan Jimenez.

Cardinal Cipriani cautioned that while Church leaders can and should work for peace and justice, they must avoid partisan activities. He explained:

We must be careful when speaking of the Church in regard to any temporal situation, because the Church has a mission which transcends earthly realities, being centered on the salvation of souls. The Church has credibility among the people in the measure that she preaches the Word of God. We, members of the clergy, must be humble and not talk about issues which are not our competence. We, bishops and priests, exist to form consciences well, so that they will be free in the truth and responsible in justice.

Graham let his players know he was leaving through a text message forwarded to the team by a football operations director. That left a bad taste in the mouth of the program, but now it is time to turn the page.

Paul Chryst takes over the top spot at Pittsburgh this season. Chryst was the offensive coordinator for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2005 through 2011 before accepting this head coaching position. The team hopes he can bring the smash mouthed football style of the Badgers to Pittsburgh.

Chryst brought several Wisconsin coordinators with him, so don?t be surprised if Pittsburgh turns into a pound it down your throat team. This is a team that needs to find a true identity soon.

Team Strengths:

Ray Graham went down with an injury in the middle of last season, but he is expected to be ready for this year. When healthy, Graham is the best running back in the Big East. Graham is an agile runner who does a great job finding open creases. Isaac Bennett appears ready to share some time in the backfield as well, and he is a real home run hitter out of the backfield. These guys should shine in the new system.

The Panthers have plenty of talent at the wide receiver spot. Devin Street caught 53 passes in 2011, and he?ll be back for another year with the team. Mike Shanahan came on at the end of last year, and he should be productive as well. Talented youngsters give this unit lots of depth.

Team Weaknesses:

The Panthers secondary is a major question mark heading into the 2012 season. This is a group that experienced a ton of turnover from last season to this season, and they will need to come together as a unit quickly. Don?t be surprised if the Panthers are beaten by the pass quite frequently this year.

Pittsburgh lost their top three offensive linemen from last season. Jim Heuber is a great offensive line coach, and he?ll do a tremendous job at Pittsburgh, but he might not have the talent he needs in 2012.

The linebackers are a mismatched group that has been thrown together after injuries and suspensions have really torn through this unit. Players changing positions as well as tons of inexperience should make Panthers fans nervous about this group.

2012-2013 Pittsburgh Panthers Football Prediction: 7-6

I think Pittsburgh did extremely well to hire Paul Chryst. He did a great job with the Badgers offense, and I think he?ll do very well with this team in the long run. Still, there are a ton of holes right now. I think this team will improve a bit from last year, but it will likely take a year or two more to see major gains.

The team will have an early measuring stick game at home against Virginia Tech on September 15.

Garmin unveils Fenix, its first GPS watch for deep-pocketed outdoorsy types (hands-on)

There may be a few more years remaining before a forced retirement, but there's no question that dedicated automotive GPS units are on the way out. Integrated products, apps and the aviation sector will keep companies like Garmin afloat, but now's as good a time as any to focus on other markets -- and where better to slap that global positioning goodness than on our wrists. Watches seems to be a growing focus for the guidance giant, following last month's GPS-less Garmin Swim introduction. That device has a relatively narrow target (namely, swimmers willing to invest $150 in the sport), but the company is back with a more versatile wearable, complete with an altimeter, barometer, compass, an optional external ANT temperature sensor and Bluetooth connectivity. There's also a GPS receiver, which can be used not only to calibrate the time and sensors, but also to track a route, direct you towards waypoints and guide you back to your starting point with TracBack.

The Fenix, as the full-featured watch is being called, is expected to retail for $400 when it hits stores at the end of August. Four bills hardly qualifies it for the luxury wristwatch category, but as digital wearables go, that's certainly approaching the top end. We had an opportunity to try out the device in an office setting (not exactly an ideal environment for a rugged GPS watch, but that's the best we could do in the middle of NYC), and the Fenix had quite a bit of heft to it -- it'll surely look out of place on smaller wrists, and probably won't score you any points among fashion-conscious friends. Inner geeks should be appeased, however -- the enclosure definitely seems an adequate size for housing all of those instruments. It also functions quite nicely as a watch -- in default mode, it displays the time and date in large characters on the backlit LCD, with a nifty ring around the digits to indicate seconds. The Garmin Fenix is on track for a late-August ship date, but you can scroll through the gallery below or dive into the PR after the break to get your fix in the meantime.

The 1,000th episode of Raw just got a whole lot more electrifying.

Moments before Monday night's Raw SuperShow went on the air, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tweeted that he will make his return to WWE programming on the 1,000th episode of Raw on July 23.

It's been more than three months since The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment appeared on WWE's flagship program. On the April 2 edition of Raw SuperShow, as The Great One soaked in the cheers following his remarkable victory over John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII,?he vowed to the WWE Universe that he'd once again become WWE Champion in the future. It's a goal that The Rock reiterated in his tweet Monday night: "As promised ? my goal: THE WWE CHAMPIONSHIP. #RELENTLESS"
