UC Riverside entomologists reconstruct the evolutionary history of assassin bugs; new work fine-tunes the Tree of Life

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

Make your own online library (part 2) - Website Monitoring News

<a href="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/491d5_links.jpg?><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-9157" style="float: right;" title="links" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/491d5_links.jpg? alt=?" width=?150? height=?150? />Which social bookmarking sites should you use for your business?

A lot of users think that social bookmarking sites lag far behind networks like <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/?>twitter and <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/?>facebook ? but these sites have their own purpose and inspiration and are not trying to be the same. How you can use them for realizing your business goals you can see in?Make your own online library (part 1). Regardless of the size of your company or the type of business you are in, social bookmarking can be a useful tool for just about anyone. There are a lot of social bookmarking sites out there, but when you start using them for the first time, you need to know where to start. As a company, it?s best to just experiment with different services and see what fits your community and customers. Let me conduct a short review of five of the best known social bookmarking sites, which can help you in the beginning.

Delicious

<a href="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/20c78_delicious_256x256.jpg?><img class="alignright wp-image-9077" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/20c78_delicious_256x256.jpg? alt=?" width=?76? height=?76? />

Delicious is the site that started the whole social bookmarking trend. The site?s search and sharing features make it an interesting place to explore the internet even if you don?t use it for storage. Delicious is really easy to use and is possibly the best choice for newbies in social bookmarking. I recommend it for your first steps in the bookmarking world ? it offers everything that the average internet user needs.

Pros:

There are a lot of add-ons available, which makes sharing fast. You can connect your Delicious account with <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/?>facebook or <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/?>twitter, so than you can automatically keep in your online library all the links (or some of the links) that you publish through these social networks. You can share links with your network and, by the way, the Delicious community may be the largest of the social bookmarking communities. That?s why there are a lot of links shared, and when you search, the number of results may be really large.

Cons:

Every link that you save can be tagged, but unfortunately you can?t sort your links. In other words, the tools for sorting and editing your bookmarks don?t offer enough. Delicious doesn?t cache your bookmarked pages ? so if the page disappears, so does your bookmark.

StumbleUpon

<img class="alignright wp-image-9079" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/20c78_stumble-upon.jpg? alt=?" width=?74? height=?74? />

StumbleUpon is a great and totally addictive social bookmarking site. If not for your business, you?ll surely love to use it for yourself. So give it a try and start stumbling! In StumbleUpon you don?t search, you stumble (though there is a search option). This means, that according to your interests, which you have entered, the site offers you interesting articles, sites, pictures, etc. The articles are sorted out based on your community too, so you literally stumble upon content that you want to see. You can bookmark the links, comment them, give thumbs up or thumbs down. StumbleUpon is great for all sorts of topics, so try it regardless of the field of business you are in.

Pros:

You can bookmark your own content and review it so that it gets more chances to appear in stumbles from other users that are interested in your topic. You can integrate a free toolbar in your browser ? this way you can bookmark every article that you read on the internet for second helpings.

Cons:

Its addictiveness may cause you to spend a lot of your time stumbling. Which is not good for business ? be careful :) And again ? no caching of bookmarks.

Digg

<a href="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/1ab38_256px-Digg.svg_.png?><img class="alignright wp-image-9085" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/1ab38_256px-Digg.svg_.png? alt=?" width=?76? height=?76? />

Digg is maybe the most powerful social bookmarking tool ? if you can get your content of the first page of Digg, tens of thousands of visitors will be headed to your website. The competition is strong though. Digg delivers the most interesting and popular content on the web.

Pros:

It?s simple to use and has an iOS application. You can subscribe and get the best results mailed to you every day. Share your content on Digg and try to build a community that will help you make this content popular.

Cons:

If your content is not interesting, it might get lost through all the other links and you?ll see no effect from using this site. So think before starting with Digg for your blog or business ? if your topics are specific and don?t attract the average internet user, using Digg will be a waste of time.

Reddit

<img class="alignright wp-image-9087" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/52d22_reddit-icon.png? alt=?" width=?83? height=?83? />

The design of Reddit might scare you at first glance, but this social bookmarking site has its own power. It?s pretty simple to use and it delivers user-generated links, which the community can vote up and down. The most popular stories go to the front page ? which is your aim. It?s really similar to Digg, so pros and cons are almost the same. The difference is in popularity. Reddit is used by significantly fewer users, who are for the most part techies. So if your business field is different, don?t use this site for gaining more traffic ? it won?t work.

Diigo?

<img class="alignright wp-image-9089" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/52d22_diigo.png? alt=?" width=?83? height=?83? />

Diigo is more than a social bookmarking site. It has highlight functionality, you can make notes in it, you can store documents there, etc.

Pros:

Diigo caches your bookmarked pages, so even if the page disappears, you can still use your bookmark and view it?s content. You can export your bookmarks and make a backup so that you won?t lose anything in case the site goes down. You can search in your bookmarks, organize your items and use Diigo on the go with the iOS and Android applications.

Cons:

I can?t see significant cons in this bookmarking tool ? but if you don?t need all of its functionality and you?d prefer a simpler social bookmarking tool, there?s no need to use Diigo.

?

And we didn?t yet mention the giant google and its?<a href="http://www.google.com/bookmarks/?>google Bookmarks. The 5 sites mentioned above are definitely better ? the only reason that you might use this tool, and not another, is that it links with all of your other google accounts. So you can see the history of your google search when you are logged in to your Gmail account, for example. The service is easy to use, though it?s not really relevant for business needs. If you want to increase the traffic to your website or blog, start with one of the above mentioned social bookmarking tools. Or why not with two? Or with all of them, until you find out which one suits you best and is the most effective for your business?

The Island

Hi All!

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in an RP based off of the 2005 movie The Island? I have never been a GM before, so it'd be awesome if I could get someone to help me out on that part. I am on RPG daily and I'd like to get a committed group of RPers together that could post at LEAST twice a week.

Anyway, here are the few thoughts I have for this at the moment:

Players could be:
Clones
Security
Doctors

There is one clone in particular that goes against the grain. It starts out a little at first, but then s/he starts asking more and more questions, pulling more of the other clones into the fray. There may be a few security members or a doctor or two that would help out the clones if they decided to revolt.

For those of you who don't know anything about the movie, here is the description from IMDB.

A man goes on the run after he discovers that he is actually a "harvestable being", and is being kept as a source of replacement parts, along with others, in a Utopian facility.

It's a very basic idea at the moment, but if anyone is interested in helping me further develop it, that would be awesome. Please let me know if you're interested! Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Robin Scott-Elliot: Forget war on doping, UCI president Pat McQuaid is happier fighting critics

There was one moment during his hour-long appearance in front of the media yesterday when Pat McQuaid, president of his sport's governing body and once a promising cyclist himself, outlined his reasoning for never having become a pro rider some four decades earlier. It was because, he said, he knew it meant he would have to make a decision whether to dope or not.

Paul Kimmage, the former pro rider turned journalist, tells a story of the moment when he was offered the chance to dope as he lay exhausted on a treatment table during his first Tour de France. He said no, and has since become a persistent campaigner to expose the practice. McQuaid said yesterday the fight against doping was one of the main reasons he sought the UCI presidency seven years ago.

McQuaid and the UCI are currently suing Kimmage. McQuaid insists it has nothing to do with Lance Armstrong or doping, it's simply about defamation. Kimmage claimed the UCI covered up a positive test recorded by Armstrong. No we didn't, say the UCI. They do admit receiving a large donation from Armstrong but insist it is unconnected. They spent $25,000 of the donation on dope tests for junior riders.

The governing body recently won a defamation case against Floyd Landis, a former Tour winner, doper and one of those who gave evidence against Armstrong. He made a similar claim. Landis is not allowed, according to the ruling, to say the UCI are "corrupt, terrorists, fools, full of s***, clowns, liars, no different to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi."

Nobody sent in the clowns in Aigle, the UCI's Swiss HQ, yesterday but if a man with large feet and a big red nose had taken a seat at the top table he might have gone unnoticed.

The UCI just doesn't seem to get it. "We don't have money like Fifa" was one line of defence laid down by McQuaid for their struggle to combat doping. That means McQuaid and the UCI can see no conflict of interest in accepting donations from riders or teams to aid the fight against doping ? a fight McQuaid, incidentally, does not believe can be won.

?

Nevertheless there is no reason for anyone to resign over all this, McQuaid insisted, pointing out that it didn't happen on his watch ? it happened when Hein Verbruggen was in charge, but the honorary president should not resign either.

"It's been a pretty horrific seven years," he said of the incidents of doping he has had to deal with during his tenure. But, hey, what can you do? Except sue.

Another Tibetan in western China self-immolates

BEIJING A Tibetan farmer set himself ablaze in front of a market in remote northwest China in the second self-immolation death near the Labrang Monastery in two days, a rights group said.

The monastery in Gansu province's Xiahe county is one of the most important outside of Tibet and was the site of numerous protests by monks following deadly ethnic riots in Tibet in 2008 that were the most sustained Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in decades.

The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet said in an email that Dorje Rinchen, a farmer in his late 50s, set himself on fire Tuesday on the main street in Xiahe and died later.

The group sent a photo allegedly showing Dorje wrapped in blankets after the immolation, his neck and head badly charred and swollen. It was not clear whether he was still alive when the blurry, poorly lit picture was taken.

The group quoted a Tibetan from Xiahe who currently lives in exile as saying that Dorje had counseled young Tibetans not to self-immolate.

A woman who answered the phone at the Xiahe Public Security Bureau refused to answer questions about the self-immolation and the phone of the local Communist Party propaganda office rang unanswered Wednesday. The number for the Labrang Monastery appeared to not be in service.

On Monday, a Tibetan herdsman died after setting himself on fire near the monastery.

Dozens of Tibetans have set themselves on fire since March 2011 in ethnic Tibetan areas of China in protest over what activists say is Beijing's heavy-handed rule in the region. Many have called for the return of their spiritual leader, the exiled Dalai Lama. The government has confirmed some, but not all, of the self-immolations.

Chinese authorities routinely deny Tibetan claims of repression and have accused supporters of the Dalai Lama of encouraging the self-immolations. The Dalai Lama and representatives of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India say they oppose all violence.

Finding Our Way Home: Getting back with #Mamavation Mondays

Right now I am joining in the first Mamavation Facebook party.? This and the fact that?a bunch of Mamavation Mom graduates are once again competing, have gotten me motivated to get moving!? It has been a long time since I have even exercised.? I have had lots of excuses like having a baby/toddler in the house and going back to work to get me out of it....but I need to quit with the excuses and get going.?

I have a goal to be back to where I was before I was pregnant with Lauren by my 40th birthday....and well that is creeping up on me very quickly.? I can't believe that it has been over two years since I was being so good, and had been smaller than I had been since high school.? A lot has been going on in those two years....which means I have to start over and start new routines.?

One thing that helped was when I was busy, scheduling my workouts.? So after all this tonight, I am going to look at my schedule and pencil in some workouts.? I think if I start working out more, I will put the fork down more too.? I know how to eat healthy....I just have to put it into practice.?

So good luck to the teams of Mamavation Moms competing again, and to any others that might be starting over like me!?

Oakland Zoo Operators Violate Election Laws | Politics and Breaking ...

The private operators of the Oakland Zoo have broken several campaign finance laws in their effort to convince county voters to pass a parcel tax on November 6, the Express has learned. Public records also indicate that the East Bay Zoological Society, the private nonprofit that has an exclusive contract with the City of Oakland to run the zoo, appears to have used taxpayer funds to help promote it?s ballot initiative, Measure A1, in violation of local and state election laws.

Public documents also show that the East Bay Zoological Society, which claims that it?s in desperate need of money and will have to discontinue programs for children if voters reject Measure A1, had spent $248,000 to promote the ballot initiative as of September 30, and wrote checks totaling $375,000 to a political committee it established to support the measure. Attendees of a recent political event say that the Zoological Society?s executive director told the audience that his organization plans to spend $1 million of its own funds to promote Measure A1.

The Oakland City Attorney?s Office said it was aware of at least one campaign violation committed by the Zoological Society. Officials for the nonprofit had posted numerous signs in favor of Measure A1 at the zoo, which is against the law because the zoo is public property ? owned by the city. The city attorney?s office said yesterday that it had ordered zoo officials to remove the signs.

The Zoological Society also appears to have violated a separate campaign law that prohibits political campaigning on public property. According to public records, the Zoological Society lists its pro-Measure A1 headquarters as being at the zoo, which is also illegal, because the zoo is owned by the citizens of Oakland. The Zoological Society?s actions are akin to a city councilmember operating his campaign for reelection out of his council office in City Hall. ?You can?t do that,? noted Ralph Kanz, a former chair of the Oakland Public Ethics Commission who is also an opponent of Measure A1.

In addition, the Zoological Society has violated a legal contract it signed with the City of Oakland in 2004 and is still in effect. That contract states that the Zoological Society ?shall not use the property for political purposes, including, but not limited to political fundraising and campaigning.?

Moreover, the Zoological Society appears to have violated another section of the contract that prohibits it from using city funds to finance political campaigns. According to the Zoological Society?s federal tax returns, it received $2.8 million annually, on average, in taxpayer funding during its three most recent reportable years ? 2008 through 2010. A substantial portion of that total came from the City of Oakland. And tax records indicate that the zoo appears to have mingled taxpayer dollars with other revenues in its general fund before writing checks for $375,000 last month to finance the pro-Measure A1 campaign.

Joel Parrott, the Zoological Society?s executive director, did not return a phone call seeking comment for this report. Carl Nichols, a Zoological Society employee who is listed on official documents filed with Alameda County as the assistant treasurer for the pro-Measure A1 campaign, also did not return a phone call.

Mark Morodomi, a supervising attorney in the Oakland City Attorney?s Office, said the Zoological Society must keep the city funds it receives separate from funds it is using for political purposes. However, there is no indication in the Zoological Society?s tax records that it has done so. It?s commonplace for public agencies that run ballot measure campaigns to establish a separate nonprofit foundation for such purposes. But the Zoological Society?s tax records make no reference to such an entity.

Because it?s a private nonprofit, the Zoological Society does not have to fully open its books to the public. Morodomi was aware of the illegal posting of campaign signs at the zoo, but did not know that the Zoological Society had also set up its pro-Measure A1 headquarters on city property ? until this reporter told him about it.

Parrot and other Measure A1 proponents have contended that, if voters turn down the ballot initiative, then the zoo will have to discontinue some educational programs for young students. However, the Zoological Society?s tax records show that the nonprofit appears to have plenty of money. In 2010, the most recent year in which data is available, the Zoological Society reported to the IRS that it ended the year with a $6.1 million net surplus. And from 2008 through 2010, it reported net surpluses averaging $2.6 million a year.

Tax records also show that Parrott?s total compensation in 2010 was $203,500, which was substantially higher than Oakland Mayor Jean Quan is paid.

Update: Here is the Zoological Society's 2010 tax return and its most recent Measure A1 campaign statement.

Potash Corp cuts full-year profit outlook again

(Reuters) - Potash Corp , the biggest global producer of its namesake crop nutrient, said its earnings for the full year will be below the low end of its previous forecast range due to delays in new contracts with buyers in China and India.

U.S-listed shares of Potash Corp, which like its rivals is facing a global supply glut, fell 4 percent to $40 in premarket trading. Rival Mosaic Co's shares fell nearly 2 percent to $53.60.

Indian fertilizer buyers are unlikely to agree to new potash contracts until December at the earliest, the head of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative (IFFCO), one of India's biggest fertilizer makers, said last week.

Potash Corp, Mosaic and Agrium Inc sell potash offshore through marketing agency Canpotex and they had been awaiting new contracts with buyers in China and India.

China and India, along with the United States and Brazil, are key consumers of potash. They buy Canadian potash through contracts renewed roughly annually.

The weakening rupee and a cut in fertilizer subsidies have made potash more expensive for Indian farmers, contributing to a stockpile of potash among North American producers.

Potash Corp temporarily shut down its biggest mine in August to reduce its stockpile.

SECOND CUT

This is the second time in three months that Potash Corp has cut its full-year outlook. The company trimmed its earnings forecast in July largely to reflect the impact of an impairment charge.

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Potash Corp had forecast full-year earnings of $2.80 to $3.20 per share in July. Analysts on average were expecting a profit of $3.34 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company said on Wednesday it expects to earn less due to lower-than-expected sales volumes of crop nutrient potash.

Third-quarter profit is expected to be at the low end of the 70 cents to 90 cents per share range, the company said. Analysts were expecting a profit of 83 cents per share.

Shares of Potash Corp closed at C$41.10 on Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Before Legal Battle, Autistic Boy&#39;s Chickens Decapitated By Criminals

DeBary, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) ? An autistic Florida boy who kept pet chickens as a means of therapy is facing heartbreak after local criminals broke onto their property and decapitated the animals.

J.J. Hart kept four chickens at his DeBary, Florida home, which he referred to as his ?ducks? as part of his therapy, helping him to break through his autism. Now his family must break the devastating news to him, that his beloved pets were brutally killed.

A legal battle had begun last week, when code enforcement officials told the Hart family the chickens had to go, granting them a two-week period in which to appeal a potential $100-a-day fine. But as the family decided what to do with the matter, local criminals decided for them.

The bloody discovery was made by J.J.?s father, Joseph, who immediately rang the police upon seeing the two hens and two juvenile chickens dead in their coop at around 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The chickens had played a major role in young J.J?s development, they told Click Orlando, helping to improve both his vocabulary and social skills.

?It was kind of a breakthrough, like he actually reacts to the chickens and makes noises we couldn?t get him to make ourselves,? Mr Hart told Click Orlando.

Now they fear how he will respond to the news of their death.

?He?s actually socializing and babbling. I don?t know how he?s going to react to this. I don?t know if he is even going to able to understand,? she said.

As police investigated the slain fouls, Ms Hart struggled to keep the youngster inside as he asks repeatedly to see his pets.

The necks of some of the carcases bore what looked to be teeth marks, a police report stated, though the family is convinced it was no animal attack.

?I would much rather it have been an animal attack,? she added. ?Though I know whoever did this is an animal.? Aside from that, however, there are few leads. The Harts have never had any trouble with neighbors, they said, nor had they been threatened in the past.

There was no sign of a forced entry, police told the Daytona Beach News-Journal, but the family observed two bricks and a piece of wood blocking the entrance to the coop.

The decapitated chicken heads have not yet all been recovered.

Chicken Soup for? | The Recipes Project

By Sally Osborn

Chicken soup is one of our modern panaceas for all ills, but it was also used as medicine in the eighteenth century. However, while nowadays it is associated with treating colds and flu (and has actually been proved to have anti-inflammatory properties), then it appears to have been considered as a stomach remedy. Take this rather graphic recipe from a collection of recipes by an unknown hand (British Library, Add 29,435):

An exelent chicken broath, from Mrs Finch

Take a lean chicken, skin it & draw it put one ounce of fine
manna in the body of it, & secure it at both ends to keep the
manna in, put it in one quart of water & let it boyl gently
till it comes to one pint, then strain it off, & drink a coffe
cup full at a time till it hath answered the purpose of giving
a stool.

Tis so very innocent a woman in child bed may take it
at any time or an infant. It is perticularly good to procure
a stool in the piles, or for any great heat in the body or
complaint in the stomach when such a medison is proper
as it also comforts the stomach & bowels at the same time it
works off & often proves effectual when all medisons have failed.

The manna in question wasn?t the wonder food of the Israelites, but the dried sap of the ash tree, which has laxative properties?

Mind you, I think I might prefer an alternative (and not so innocent) remedy for the ?looseness? or diarrhoea, from another anonymous collection (Wellcome Library, MS.1321)? although it does sound more like a hangover cure:

Take 6 spoonfulls of the best brandy & beat the yolk of an egge very
well & mix with it & grate in a whole nuttmegg & put in a little sugar
& brew it well together & drink it next your heart in a morning.

Apologies for cross-posting. This post appeared on my own blog Travels and Travails in 18th-Century England?(14 January 2011).

Greenhut: Brown rebuffs corporate welfare - Conservative News

SACRAMENTO ? In much of the country, the mere mention of the name, Jerry Brown, signifies the otherworldly nature of California politics.

Many people in other states have come up to me and said something to this effect: ?You Californians are so weird that, in tough economic times, you re-elected that retread from the 1970s.?

Yet, in this season of bill signings, vetoes and elections, Gov. Brown has remained the last bulwark against the truly crazy left-wingers who run the Capitol. Brown, through his vetoes, has rejected union enrichment schemes, illegal-immigrant ?rights? measures and other nonsense. And, despite his troubling push for higher taxes with Proposition 30, the governor vetoed all six bills that were designed to resurrect, in one way or another, the redevelopment process he killed last year.

Redevelopment is a land-use and tax scheme that blends Eastern-European-style central planning with American-style crony capitalism.

Started in the 1940s to provide local governments with a ?tool? to fight urban blight, redevelopment morphed into a centralized planning system that obliterated property rights by giving City Hall expanded powers to condemn and acquire private property. Instead of fighting blight, city officials used the system to finance projects such as sales-tax-generating car dealerships, shopping malls, big-box stores and hotels by showering subsidies on influential developers.

City councils, via their local redevelopment bureaucracies, gained the power to declare large areas of their cities ?blighted? based on the widest-ranging set of criteria. Once designated as blighted, a redevelopment project area was formed, and all the ?tax increment? ? i.e., the growth in property tax revenue generated by improvements in that specific area ? flowed to the locality rather than the county and state. Redevelopment agencies would float debt and use the added property tax money to pay off the bonds that financed the subsidies that were provided to developers, who built projects directed from City Hall.

The cities loved it because they would gain the sales taxes and bed taxes from the new projects and could micromanage development decisions. Developers profited by manipulating City Hall. Property owners got bulldozed, and all the government intervention distorted the market, but since when has government ever cared about that?

I wrote about efforts to take church property in Orange County and give it to Costco, plans to demolish an entire neighborhood of middle-class homes so that the city could market the land to a theme-park developer, and plans to give massive subsidies to billionaire developers.

These were typical examples, not aberrations. The subsidies led to the overdevelopment of shopping centers and other commercial projects.

After the U.S. Supreme Court?s Kelo decision in 2005, allowing cities to use eminent domain on behalf of private developers, many states passed serious reforms that cracked down on the abuses. Not California, which eventually passed a fake reform sponsored by the League of California Cities and the California Redevelopment Association.

But a funny thing happened. The economy soured, and the fiscal promises of redevelopment turned into fiscal liabilities. The state ran low on cash. Gov. Brown realized that he could find several billion dollars by shutting down these agencies, which operate locally but are creations of the state.

Ironically, Republican legislators who claim to care about free markets fought the governor on this one, addicted as their cities had become to redevelopment cash and as addicted as they had become to campaign contributions from subsidy-seeking developers.

Democrats, who tend to love the central-planning aspects of redevelopment, went along with killing it, for the wrong reasons (more money for the state and to be loyal to their governor).

Victories are never permanent in government ? especially a government run by people who recognize few limits on their taxing and regulating powers. The most brazen attempt to resurrect redevelopment was Senate Bill 1156, by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento:

?In order to more effectively address blight, the program shall be established to support development in transit priority project areas and small walkable communities and to support clean energy manufacturing through tax increment revenue.?

Basically, the Steinberg bill created redevelopment with a more limited focus and a few more safeguards. But Gov. Brown nixed this, and said in his veto statement: ?This measure would likely cause cities to focus their efforts on using new tools provided by the measure instead of winding down redevelopment.? He also pointed to the need for continued general-fund savings.

The governor remains focused on the money rather than the abuses, but a veto is a veto. The redevelopment community was livid. One pro-redevelopment writer argued that Brown?s vetoes ?add insult to injury,? but the folks insulted and injured by the governor richly deserve this outcome. Small property owners ? the victims of insult and injury at the hands of redevelopment ? should be happy.

Even when it looked like the new agencies would be resurrected, Assemblyman Chris Norby, the Fullerton Republican and longtime redevelopment foe, argued in a letter to redevelopment agency opponents that the new agencies would be a far cry from the old RDAs: ?These IFDs [Infrastructure Finance Districts] have no power to forcibly take property tax increment from counties, schools or special districts.?

In his view, there would be no ?free money? for cities. They could use tax increment, but that money would come from their own general fund ? an unlikely development.

Nevertheless, the new IFDs would have had eminent-domain powers and would have given new life to the redevelopment industry. No doubt, next year the same officials would be back again expanding the use of tax increment. It?s far better to keep the lid on redevelopment and encourage these privilege-seekers to move on to other scams.

Brown is no dummy. He wasn?t about to resurrect something he expended so much political capital in killing. Obviously, he is no believer in limited government, so our victories this year may be fleeting. But things could be worse, and the governor deserves great credit for standing his ground against the kings of corporate welfare.

Giants make 'statement' in routing 49ers 26-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The New York Giants issued a statement of their own to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh on Sunday.

Maybe the rest of the NFL, too.

While questions still surround the defending Super Bowl champions, New York's 26-3 rout of the favored 49ers sent a clear message across the league.

"The statement made," wide receiver Victor Cruz said, "is that we're here to stay."

Antrel Rolle intercepted two passes by Alex Smith, Prince Amukamara picked off another and the Giants shut down San Francisco in a rematch of last season's NFC championship game. After outscoring the Bills and Jets by a combined 79-3 the last two weeks, the 49ers (4-2) met their match again.

No overtime needed this time, and not much of Eli Manning, either.

Manning threw for 193 yards and one touchdown, Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 116 yards and a score and New York (4-2) rode that dominant defense and four field goals by Lawrence Tynes to hand the outspoken Harbaugh the most lopsided loss of his tenure.

What a San Francisco treat.

"We were just waiting for them to play like we know they can play," Manning said of New York's defense. "They played outstanding. They played really well, flying around."

The Giants grinded out a 20-17 overtime win at rain-soaked Candlestick Park on Jan. 22, capitalizing on two fumbles by fill-in punt returner Kyle Williams en route to another Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. All week, some San Francisco players talked about "unfinished business." And Harbaugh added to the hype when he fired back a strongly worded statement criticizing Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who had mostly praised San Francisco and defensive end Justin Smith before saying the All-Pro often "gets away with murder" holding linemen.

Harbaugh issued a news release calling that an "outrageous, irrational statement" and said "it's obvious that the Giants coaching staff's sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating."

For all the hoopla, the rematch was never close.

Amukamara's interception in the second quarter started a surge of New York offense. Smith, who wore tape around his sprained middle finger that he said wasn't an issue, lofted the pass too high and allowed Amukamara to leap underneath the ball before tight end Delanie Walker even had a chance at the Giants 33.

At one point in the first half, Manning completed eight consecutive passes for 142 yards and had the usually stout San Francisco defense out of sorts. Domenik Hixon tip-toed the sideline to catch passes of 39 and 16 yards on consecutive third downs, and Cruz followed with a 6-yard touchdown reception and his usual salsa dance in the end zone for a 7-3 lead.

"We know last year wasn't a fluke," Bradshaw said. "We know what we can be."

Tynes kicked a 34-yard field goal for a 10-3 lead and Tarell Brown blocked a 40-yard attempt by Tynes, which led to David Akers' miss wide left from 52 yards as the half expired.

Akers, who tied the NFL record with a 63-yard field goal in a Week 1 win at Green Bay, also hooked a 43-yarder wide right on San Francisco's first drive. He made a 42-yarder from the same right hash mark. The All-Pro kicker is 11 of 16 this season.

"It wasn't a great day for any of us," Harbaugh said.

Once the break was over, the Giants sent San Francisco spiraling down and out in a New York minute.

David Wilson returned the second-half kickoff 66 yards to set up Bradshaw's 1-yard TD run. That quieted the Candlestick crowd ? except for the Giants fans that sprinkled the stands blue on a sun-splashed day along the bay.

The 49ers had not allowed a 100-yard rusher in the previous 22 home games. The last time was Tennessee's Chris Johnson, who ran for 135 yards on Nov. 8, 2009

On San Francisco's next two possessions, Rolle intercepted Smith's passes. The first came on an overthrown pass intended for former Giant Mario Manningham that Rolle returned 20 yards to the San Francisco 12. On the second, he stepped in front of a pass to Williams and ran 22 yards to the San Francisco 5.

"I could tell, at times, we had him a little rattled," Rolle said.

"It's tough to speak about any other facet," Smith said. "We made it tough on the defense."

The only downside for New York is it settled for field goals both times. Then again, not many points were needed.

The Giants sacked Smith six times and had him under constant pressure, made worse when left tackle Joe Staley left with a concussion in the third quarter. Smith finished 19 of 30 for 200 yards, and the 49ers were held to 80 yards rushing.

"The nice thing was the pounding away of the pencil on the defensive line," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I think the defensive line finally decided they were going to come out and play today and they did."

The 49ers were coming off a 45-3 home romp against Buffalo, racking up a franchise-record 621 yards and becoming the first team in NFL history with 300 yards passing and 300 yards rushing in the same game. This time, they were smashed.

"Coaches always let us know that we're not the kings of the NFL, the Giants are," 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers said. "They won a title last year and they're still that team to beat until somebody wins the Super Bowl."

NOTES: San Francisco's 16-6 loss at the Baltimore Ravens last Thanksgiving night had been the most lopsided defeat the last two seasons. ... It was the seventh time in Smith's career the 2005 No. 1 overall pick threw three interceptions and first since a 27-13 loss at Philadelphia on Dec. 20, 2009. ... 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs, who was inactive again, was in the Giants locker room handing out hugs and handshakes after the game to his former teammates.

Human trafficking summit called to tackle sexual exploitation | News ...

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is to host a summit to look at new ways the Scottish Government and its partners can tackle the problem of human trafficking in Scotland.

The event on Thursday will bring together representatives from organisations which have a clear role either in tackling the crime or supporting the victims.

Its aim is to identify and agree further action to add to existing measures already being taken.

Mr MacAskill said: "Human trafficking is an abhorrent crime. It's totally unacceptable in this day and age that victims continue to be exploited for forced labour, sex or domestic servitude. We want to do everything we can to stamp it out wherever and whenever it occurs.

"That is why we are hosting the summit on October 18 to bring together a range of partners to look at where we can potentially strengthen existing measures, whilst identifying future priorities for action.

"Thursday is European anti-trafficking day so it is very timely that this summit is being held. I am looking forward to discussing the issue with delivery partners and coming up with some real tangible measures which will strengthen our approach to tacking this appalling crime."

Among the delegates attending will be the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Scotland head of legal Lynn Welsh.

She said: "Almost a year on from the publication of the EHRC's groundbreaking inquiry report into human trafficking in Scotland, we look forward to contributing to this summit, which should be an important milestone in the development of a comprehensive Scottish trafficking strategy to address this terrible human rights abuse.

"The EHRC will shortly carry out a one-year review to assess whether and how our inquiry recommendations have been addressed and implemented by government and public bodies."

The summit will take place in Edinburgh.

Scottish Trades Union Congress president Agnes Tolmie will also be attending.

She said: "The crime of human trafficking cannot be allowed in any civilised society. We must do all in our power to combat the criminal abuse of human beings in forced labour, domestic servitude and sexual exploitation.

"The identification of victims of this crime must be prioritised to rescue the abused from physical and economic threats to them and their families.

"We want all the involved agencies in Scotland who combat trafficking to ensure proper support mechanisms are in place to support the victims of this heinous crime.

"This summit should be a significant step in achieving these goals and challenging the criminals who profit from the misery of their victims."

US, Nepal Build Relationships, Improve Lives | DoDLive

A Nepali woman listens to infant care advice from a Nepalese army doctor two days after her baby was delivered and resuscitated by team Project HOPE and Nepali health care professionals who were supporting Operation Pacific Angel 12-4 at Nau Danda Health Post of Dhikur Pokhari Village Development Committee of Kaski District, Nepal on Sept. 14, 2012. Operations like Pacific Angel build and sustain relationships with our multinational partners, and non-governmental agencies in the Asia-Pacific region. (Courtesy photo)

A multinational team led by U.S., Nepalese, and Australian military members and civilians treated more than 4,100 villagers, repaired and renovated three schools, and shared expertise Sept. 10-15, during Operation Pacific Angel 12-4 in Nepal.

The first Pacific Angel mission in Nepal featured free medical assistance in pediatrics, optometry, physiotherapy, public health infection control, food safety, women?s health and pre-post partum nutrition care.

A very real example of the benefits of working together came during the mission when a newborn baby got a second chance at life. The child was a breech birth, and local doctors had pronounced him dead when two Project Hope doctors teamed up with a Nepal army nurse to provide rescue breathing ? reviving him, to the delight of a grateful family.

In addition to the thousands of patients receiving care, 80 Nepal Aamy and U.S. military designers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters and brick-layers enhanced and improved a school, hostel, restroom facilities, water tank and pump systems and school cafeteria at Macchapucchre primary and secondary schools and at the Macchhapuchhre district post.

The U.S. and Nepalese also shared information and techniques related to humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and emergency response. Members of the Nepal army, U.S. Air Force and Pokhara police force held classes and conducted simulated exercises at the Western Regional Nepal Army Headquarters.

The entire effort featured over 200 Nepal army, U.S. Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and Mongolian Armed Forces members. They were assisted by the staffs of Gandaki Medical College, Teaching Hospital and Research Centre Private Limited (Charak Hospital), Himalaya Eye Hospital ? Nau Danda Training Health Post and the Western Regional Health Directorate. Also helping were volunteers from the Junior Red Cross Of Shree Macchapuchhre Higher Secondary School, and the Dikhur Pokhari Youth Network.

Participants, officials and local citizens reflected on the successful mission during a ceremony at Machhapuchhre Higher Secondary School in Kaski District, Pokhara, on Sept. 17. During the closing festivities, a U.S. Air Force general officer spoke on the value of teamwork and partnership.

?We are honored to have worked alongside the Nepal army through our Pacific Angel program and deeply appreciate the hospitality our Nepalese hosts have extended to us,? said Maj. Gen. Russell J. Handy,? the Director of Operations, Plans, Requirements and Programs for U.S. Pacific Air Forces.

?These efforts are a visible expression of our combined commitment to peace and stability in this region ? with the desire to strengthen the relationship between our countries and our continuing resolve to ensure increased humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in this region,?
