I?m outraged that time and again the health-care needs of women are under attack in this country. The debate over whether religious employers should cover birth control is a prime example. The establishments that want to deny their employees this basic right are stepping over the line.

There is an exemption in the Affordable Care Act that allows churches/houses of worship to refuse to provide birth control. Other religious institutions (such as universities and hospitals) that receive public dollars should play by the rules. It is my belief that people are pushing their ideological views and opinions onto others and not addressing the health-care needs of women. Birth control absolutely should be provided, no question.

Birth control is basic health care, and there are numerous reasons that a woman may use birth control. Some include contraception, hormonal balancing, acne, ovarian cysts and many, many more. These issues are private, and reasons for use should be discussed between the doctor and patient. The pill is definitely a preventive measure against many health issues and unintended pregnancies. I think people should be more informed and wake up to the growing statistics of unintended and teen pregnancies and the various other medical reasons women need contraceptives. Furthermore, making birth control more affordable helps people plan pregnancies and prevent the need for abortion. This is something we should all be able to support.

My hope is that every woman will stand up and say that these attacks need to stop. Get informed and spread the word! Women deserve access to affordable, preventive health care.

Objective: To study the effects of simvastatin on human prostate cancer cell line PC-3 in vitro and its mechanisms. Meanwhile, to investigate the effects of simvastatin combined with anti-cancer agents Paclitaxel?Cisplatin on human prostate cancer cell line PC-3 in vitro.Methods: 1 PC-3 cells were incubated in culture medium in vitro. Effect of simvastatin on the proliferation of PC-3 cells was measured by MTT colorimetric method and the OD values were computed. Apoptosis and distribution of cell cycle were examined with flow cytometry. The morphological changes of PC-3 cells were observed by light microscopy and the analysis of DNA-fragment was shown by DNA gelatum electrophoresis. In addition, expression of p21Ras?E2F-1?CDK4 and Bax was analyzed by flow cytometric indirect immunofluorescent technigue. 2 MTT colorimetric method was performed to evaluate the potential cytostatic effect of combining simvastatin and Paclitaxel?Cisplatin on human prostate cancer cell line PC-3 and the OD values were computed. KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? More than 40 people, most of them children, have frozen to death in what has been Afghanistan's coldest winter in years, an Afghan health official said Monday.

The government has recorded 41 deaths from freezing in three provinces ? Kabul, Ghor and Badakhshan, said Health Ministry spokesman Ghulam Sakhi Kargar.

All but three or four of those deaths were children, he said. Twenty-four of the deaths were in the capital of Kabul, mostly in camps for people who have fled fighting elsewhere in the country.

Kabul has been experiencing its worst cold snap and heaviest snowfall in 15 years, according to the National Weather Center. It said the weather was to improve by the end of the week.

Heavy snowfall in Day Kundi province caused an avalanche late Sunday in the Sang-i-Takht district that damaged three dozen homes and shops. The avalanche caused no injuries, said Nasrullah Sadiqizada, a member of parliament from the central province.

The hardest-hit have been people living in tents in a number of camps around the capital. The deaths in these camps, so close to the offices of international organizations overseeing billions of dollars in aid to the country, have shocked many in Kabul.

The U.N. and the U.S. aid agency have started distributing extra blankets, tarps and fuel to people living in 40 camps throughout the city, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement last week. Most of those in the camps have fled from Helmand and Kunduz provinces, though some are Afghans who have returned from years living in Iran and Pakistan to find themselves homeless, the statement said.

NATO also delivered an estimated 1,000 blankets, coats, socks, mittens and hats to a refugee camp in Kabul. The coalition said it was planning additional delivers within the next week.

Kargar says the ministry is establishing mobile clinics to try to get help out to people suffering in the cold.

The cold has also caused a spike in the price of gas and wood ? the main fuel used by the city's five million or so residents to heat their homes. Heavy snows also damaged high tension wires coming into the capital, causing sporadic blackouts in large swaths of Kabul. About 75 percent of the city has electricity.

Kabul city hall said the capital's markets have supplies to last out the bad weather and there was no shortage of fire wood or food. Kabul Kahid Mohammad, director of Kabul markets, said main highways leading into the city were clear.

Kabul airport was also operating, officials said, although there were delays at times due to poor visibility because of the snowfall.

Fireworks exploded, military music boomed and people waved artificial pink and red flowers.

Kim Jong Il ruled with an iron fist for 17 years, a period that included a famine in the 1990s that killed hundreds of thousands of people and protracted tensions over the nation's drive to build nuclear weapons. Food shortages persist in North Korea and relations with South Korea are at their lowest point in years. But since Kim's death two months ago, expressions of mourning and adoration have been common in Pyongyang.

After the funeral, Kim Jong Un was named supreme commander of the country's 1.2 million-member military. State media and officials have praised Kim Jong Il as a strong but benevolent leader, while calling Kim Jong Un the unquestioned choice to succeed him in this socialist nation of 24 million.

"We will faithfully uphold the 'military-first' leadership of our respected supreme commander and comrade with our guns," military General Staff chief Ri Yong Ho said in a speech.

"Let's dedicate our lives to protect Kim Jong Un!" troops in the plaza roared.

At Kim Il Sung Square, the main plaza in the capital, North Koreans bowed and laid flowers, including red "kimjongilia" begonias, at a portrait of Kim Jong Il hanging on the Grand People's Study House. Among them was Paek Won Chol, who described himself as a "soldier and disciple" of Kim Jong Il.

"I will devote my all for the building of a powerful and prosperous nation" under Kim Jong Un, Paek said.

Thursday's memorial could serve as closure to North Korea's mourning ahead of important nuclear talks next week with the United States, said John Delury, an assistant professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il's death halted discussions between Pyongyang and Washington on much-needed food aid in exchange for nuclear disarmament. North Korea has tested two atomic devices since 2006. A U.S. envoy will hold talks with North Korea on its nuclear program in Beijing next week, the first such negotiations since Kim's death.

"There were a lot of balls in the air when Kim Jong Il died, so things froze," Delury said. "The timing of this public ceremony ... allows North Korea to make a last major public expression of grief as part of moving on and getting back to a lot of orders of business."

In a burst of propaganda, composers have crafted new odes to Kim Jong Il, while sculptors have chiseled slogans honoring him into the sides of mountains. His birthday was renamed "Day of the Shining Star," and this week he was accorded a new title: Generalissimo.

The North's leadership has sought to portray Kim as a defender of the nation, which has remained in a technical state of war with the United States since the 1950s, when the Korean War left the Korean peninsula divided into north and south. During his rule, Kim focused on building nuclear weapons, calling them necessary protection against the U.S. military presence in South Korea even as they drew sanctions.

Kim Yong Nam, North Korea's nominal head of state, praised Kim Jong Il on Tuesday for "turning our country into an invincible one that can never be defeated and has a nuclear deterrent."

Portraits of Kim show him smiling beatifically, and a stamp issued following his death captures him sharing a laugh with Kim Jong Un. Those images are replicated across Pyongyang in huge portraits hanging at the People's Palace of Culture, a flower exhibition featuring his kimjongilia begonias and at a book fair at the Grand People's Study House.

It's an image that contrasts with Kim Jong Il in his later years, as he reportedly recovered from a stroke and battled chronic illness. He often appeared in public wearing a heavy parka and dark sunglasses.

Last month, top leaders of the Workers' Party announced that Kim's body would lie in state at Kumsusan, where his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, already lies in state.

Officials said later Thursday that the building had been renamed Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. Kim Jong Il has often been referred to as the "Sun of the 21st Century" in state propaganda, which calls Kim Il Sung's birthday the "Day of the Sun."

While North Korea's leadership has venerated Kim Jong Il, it has also emphasized his son's links to his revered grandfather, whom Kim Jong Un resembles in looks and style.

Shedding the quiet demeanor he displayed when his father was alive, Kim Jong Un wasted no time in asserting himself as the new leader, making energetic visits to military units seen as important to his father's "military first" policy.

At Kumsusan palace Thursday, he strolled slowly onto a reviewing stand beneath another large portrait of his father. The crowd then paid silent tribute to Kim Jong Il, heads bowed, while a breeze ruffled the flags and Kim Jong Un's hair.

During the military parade, Kim appeared relaxed, laughing and speaking with Ri Yong Ho and Armed Forces Minister Kim Yong Chun.

Explosive evolution need not follow mass extinctions, study of ancient zooplankton finds

Following one of Earth's five greatest mass extinctions, tiny marine organisms called graptoloids did not begin to rapidly develop new physical traits until about 2 million years after competing species became extinct.

This discovery, based on new research, challenges the widely held assumption that a period of explosive evolution quickly follows for survivors of mass extinctions.

In the absence of competition, the common theory goes, surviving species hurry to adapt, evolving new physical attributes to take advantage of newly opened niches in the ecosystem. But that's not what researchers found in graptoloid populations that survived a mass extinction about 445 million years ago.

"What we found is more consistent with a different theory, which says you might expect an evolutionary lag as the ecosystem reforms itself and new interspecies relationships form," said University at Buffalo geology professor Charles E. Mitchell, who led the research.

The research provides insight on how a new mass extinction, possibly one resulting from man-made problems such as deforestation and climate change, might affect life on Earth today.

"How would it affect today's plankton? How would it affect groups of organisms in general?" asked the paper's lead author, David W. Bapst, a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, who studied with Mitchell as an undergraduate.

"The general motivation behind this work is understanding how extinction and evolution of form relate to each other, and the fossil record is the only place where we can do these sort of experiments across long spans of time," Bapst said.

The research on graptoloids is scheduled to appear the week of Feb. 13 in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Other team members included Peter C. Bullock and Michael J. Melchin of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, and H. David Sheets of Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. The National Science Foundation and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada supported the study.

Graptoloids are an extinct zooplankton that lived in colonies. Because the animals evolved quickly and had a wide geographic range, their fossil record is rich ? a trove of information on how species diversify.

Bapst, Mitchell and their colleagues examined two different groups of graptoloids in their study: neograptines and diplograptines. Each kind lived during the Ordovician mass extinction that began about 445 million years ago, but only neograptines survived.

Before the extinction event, diplograptine species were dominant, outnumbering neograptine species. Diplograptines also varied more in their morphology, building colonies of many different shapes.

With diplograptines gone after the Ordovician mass extinction, neograptines had a chance to recover in an environment free of competitors.

According to the popular ecological release hypothesis, a popular theory, these circumstances should have led to a burst of adaptive radiation. In other words, without competition, the neograptines should have diversified rapidly, developing new physical traits ? new colonial architectures ? to take advantage of ecological niches that the diplograptines once filled.

But that's not what the researchers found.

To test the adaptive radiation idea, they analyzed the colony forms of 183 neograptine and diplograptine species that lived before, during or after the Ordovician mass extinction ? a total of 9 million years of graptoloid history.

This wealth of data enabled the team to track graptoloid evolution with more precision than past studies could. What the researchers discovered looked nothing like adaptive radiation.

Almost immediately following the Ordovician mass extinction, new neograptine species proliferated, as expected. But according to the study, these new species displayed only small changes in form or morphology, not the burst of innovation the release hypothesis predicts. In fact, graptoloids had been evolving new physical traits at a more intensive pace before the extinction event.

Limited morphological innovation among neograptines continued for approximately 2 million years after the extinction, Bapst said.

The lag supports a type of evolution that argues that interactions between co-evolving species help foster diversification. Because such relationships likely take time to develop in a recovering ecosystem, an evolutionary lag of the kind the graptoloid study detected should occur in the wake of a mass extinction.

Another possible explanation is that newly appeared graptoloid species may have differed in ways outside of physical traits, a phenomenon that biologists refer to as non-adaptive radiations. A third possibility is that graptoloids may have experienced evolutionary lag due to their complex mode of growth.

Besides investigating how neograptines fared after the extinction event, the team also analyzed whether colony form alone could explain why neograptines survived the mass extinction while diplograptines disappeared. The scientists concluded that this was unlikely, suggesting a role for other factors such as possible differences in the preferred habitat of the two groups.
